The Beatles bust loose in big screen debut

A Hard Day’s Night is the cinematic introduction to the unrivaled cultural phenomenon of the Beatles. The film is a simple faux-documentary starring the Beatles traveling to London with a troublesome grandfather in order to perform on TV. The natural, photogenic, charming nature of the Fab Four along with the action and energy captured by the up-close-and-personal direction of Richard Lester keep the story flowing smoothly and entertaining. Filmed in black and white, it reveals the Beatles during their meteoric ascent. Yet they’re still in a time of innocence, playfully escaping their fans, managers and the police. A very English sensibility reigns via many one-liners, pratfalls and plain absurd dada silliness. It also slyly pokes at popular culture as fan devotion, autographed pictures, and corporate “trendsetting”.

It is a positive, bustling, hilarious, sympathetic cinematic piece and throughout we hear the classic, timeless Beatles songs, which started the legend. Providing a glimpse of what early Beatlemania must have been like, A Hard Day’s Night is a true classic of music-oriented films.
